(Ps. this is not an academic post, it's more of a journal for my MIL class)

DAY 10- 12/13/17

"Language is a source of misunderstanding"-McLuhan,1964

I agree with this statement. Even though the language was created as a medium for humans to understand each other, we cannot deny the fact that it also causes misunderstandings. Language and decoding its meaning is a very complex process because you need to keep in mind various factors such as background, experience etc. These factors can greatly affect how a person deciphers and derives meaning from a message. Thus, a message can have various meanings varying person-to-person.

Does the user's own background or experience affect the interpretation of messages? How?

The user's background and/or experience does affect the receiver's interpretation of the message because his/her background and experience can greatly influence how a person can perceive and understand the message. Different backgrounds, such as cultures and races, have a different perception of aspects in daily life combined with each individual's own experience, can vary how a message can be interpreted.

Is it possible that a different individual derives a different meaning from the message?

Yes, as said before a person's background, such as his language, race, and culture, as well as his experience can greatly affect how a person understands and decipher a message. Thus, a meaning derived from a similar message could vary from each individual.

"The first step in becoming media and information literate is to understand how information, ideas, and meaning are communicated through and by various media and other information providers, such as libraries, archives, museums and the internet."

What information codes, conventions, and messages about our country is communicated through advertisements?
Advertisements are similar to films you can see a country's culture or state during that time period through the advertisements/films they release. Advertisements, similar to films, are created with the consumer/audience's wants and demands in mind.

If you are to create a postcard for a place or organization of your choice, what technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important information and create the desired impression? Why?   I would use symbols that are either universally known, simple or easy so than anyone of all ages, race and etc. may be able to understand it even a little bit.

How is understanding of the technical and symbolic codes contribute to media and information literacy?
Understanding technical and symbolic codes contribute to media and information literacy because they are part of media. Similar to messages from print media and etc. they also convey a message that is important to a particular group or populatiob. Being literate with these symbolic codes can help form an understading between people and avoid miscommunication.____________________________________________________________________

"A local government official was charged with graft and corruption and was suspended from his office. The government official announced that the charges were all fabricated and that he will not step down from his office. A large group of supporters is present to protest. They barricaded the building where the official has once taken office. A struggle seems to start breaking out between the protesters and the office."

   1. Predict how this event will be covered by television, radio, print, and internet?  How this event will be published vary on what mediums will be used.  In the television, they may be able to show a live video/ pre-recorded video detailing the vent. For radios, the reporter can only narrate and describe the scenario. With print, the article will be published later compared to television and radio and it may already be filtered.  While on the internet, the news may come from netizens and the information might be wrong.

   2. How is the presentation of facts may vary from medium to medium?    There are mediums wherein there are facts that can be presented visually, such as video, pictures, and articles, and there are some that can be presented only verbally. In some media professionals are the only ones who can publish facts/article while in others it is open to anyone

    3. How are the codes and conventions vary from medium to medium? How much of these differences will be based on the unique characteristics of the medium?     Codes vary from a medium varies to another medium because mediums have their different way of presenting information.  These differences can greatly affect how information is spread and decoded by the receiver.
