001 Introduction to Media and Information Literacy (Lecture)

DAY 1 - 11/7/17

For the past week, how many hours did you spend engaging with media and information providers?

*this was during our sembreak, so don't judge me

Which media provider did you spend the most time? What roles does the media play in your lives?

I spent the most time with books. Media plays a huge role in my life. It has been a source of enjoyment and where I spend my leisure time. Media also provides me with news and information that I need to keep updated on what's happening around the globe. And, it has been a place for learning and communication.

Collette's Definition of:

Technology Literacy - having knowledge and understanding of technologies 

Media Literacy- having knowledge and understanding of media and  its type 

Information Literacy- having knowledge and understanding of how one should process information and how one uses information

Media and Information Literacy- having knowledge and understanding of  how media and information work together

Even though the language was created as a medium for humans to understand each other, we cannot deny the fact that it also causes misunderstandings. Language and decoding its meaning is a very complex process because you need to keep in mind various factors such as background, experience etc. These factors can greatly affect how a person deciphers and derives meaning from a message.
